Hipp hipp hurra for 17. Mai!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 by Kiyu

Had such a great day, thanks for sharing it with me, Hui! Unfortunately I have no photos from the day (this is the only one I could find, all credits to lovely Hui!), was too busy skipping around with my flag, distributing fresh-out-of-the-oven boller (Norwegian sweet buns) to remember bringing my camera along! I feel like such a good girl, I got up really early on my own accord to bake the buns! And goodness knows my sleeping pattern is little more than a wreck these days with my crazy exams! Actually, I have another exam in about 2.5 hours. Ehe.

I only met one other Norwegian yesterday, and I heard there were other ones with flags and Norwegian hoodies as well! Such a shame I didn’t get to meet them!

17th May coming up

Friday, May 14th, 2010 by Kiyu

17th May is the Norwegian constitution day, and we have this HUGE AND AWESOME celebration every year (just google it!). I won’t be able to partake in it this year because I’m currently living in England, but Rolf and Maisen brought me some traditional 17th May flags (as seen in the photo) and I intend to celebrate the day my own way here in England! Will probably bake some traditional sweet buns for distribution in the Square, organize a picnic and skip around on the concrete proudly waving my flag! (I’m very very very patriotic)

I have an exam in Cells and life molecules in 6 hours, so I’m gonna go back to my revision now! Tudelu!

The smell of cardamom

Monday, May 10th, 2010 by Kiyu

Nothing brings back childhood memories like the smell of cardamom… I love traditional Norwegian sweet buns! I only realized while scavenging for ingredients how Norwegian recipes always have that exciting little twist on everything. Like the use of cardamom and vanilla sugar in cakes and bakes. I’m so used to it that I never questioned it, but apparently it’s very bold and odd! It’s so exclusively Scandinavian that I had to buy cardamom pods, peel them to get the seeds and ground them myself! Geez! Baking is tough work in UK! Soon I’ll get some vanilla pods and make my own vanilla sugar as well. Damn straight!

HELL YEAH, I GET TO TEACH!

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 by Kiyu

Just a quick update to tell you guys something amazing! You probably don’t know, but my true goal in the academic and professional life, is to someday become a professor. I love education, I love school, and yeah, I know I’m a total dork :3

There’s a married couple in Norfolk (Norwich, where I’ll be staying, lies within Norfolk), the mother is British while the father is Norwegian. They have a 6 year old son, and Mrs. Tokin, the mother, wants her son to be able to communicate in Norwegian as well. She therefore contacted ANSA UK, which sent an e-mail to ME and asked me if I was interested in tutoring the boy.

HELL YEAH I AM! This is so unbelievable! I get to teach! At the age of mere 19! And a (half) British kid too!

Seems like amazing things keep happening to me! Must be because my 19th birthday is coming up soon! Probably a heavenly gift! Anna, dear Anna, I honestly almost believe my life really is a fairy tale!

Here’s the exact e-mail I got:

Wish me luck in getting the job! (I’ll do it for free if I have to!)
