Polaroids at a BBQ

Friday, June 4th, 2010 by Kiyu

Tina’s polaroids of us from a BBQ on Wednesday. Left polaroid: Corinne, me, Doris and Heather | Right polaroid: Corinne, Tina, me and Heather

Looking at these polaroids, it struck me how incredibly much I’ve actually changed appearance-wise during the past year. I’ve become much more feminine, and I’m not sure my classmates from high school would ever recognize me if they saw me now!

I’ve had such a great time after my exams ended (WOW intense period, power napping only, more on that later), being up to something every day and keeping myself occupied. Granted, there were a few episodes I could have lived without (like how I got drunk for the very first time last night out), but overall it’s been a really good time! I’ve also FINALLY dusted the dust off my Canon 450D and let it do some work again, so there will be loads of photos coming up within the next week I think!

Spring is fast approaching UK

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 by Kiyu

Snapped this photo when I was in London with ML in the weekend on our way to a Mac cosmetics store. I’ve seen loads of these pink flowering trees all over Norwich now, they’re gorgeous! If anyone have any clue of what kind of flower/tree this is, please educate me!

I love all the buds and colours popping up everywhere in UK right now, but loathe the mushy weather. Didn’t know UK was this grey and dull… Did you know we get more overcast than sunny? Something like 60% overcast and 30% sun after what I’ve seen from living 8 months in Norwich!

Anyway, came back to UK dragging my dearest ML with me on friday, and went into London on sunday to see Lion King the musical. The trip into London was quite tiring so we actually ended up falling asleep during a scene with Timon and Pumba… yes, I am ashamed. Tip to myself: never book tickets for any events for the same day you’re travelling a long distance!

Had this AMAZING strawberry tart at a fancy cafè at Picadilly Circus. I normally steer away from whipped cream because I don’t like the taste, but this tart made me LOVE it!

We had to hit Yo!Sushi because ML loves sushi, and I tried out chicken teriyaki which was DELICIOUS. Next time I go somewhere they serve Japanese food I’ll get something teriyaki. Yummmm. Great service and nice people at Yo!Sushi!

A disheveled-looking Kiyu sipping one of those addictive smoothies. Raise your hand if you hate wind and humidity! Hopefully my newly bought S factor Smoothing Lusterizer will save me from future hair battles with mother earth’s whims!

For more photos, head over to the gallery!

AWH, ANNA!

Sunday, March 14th, 2010 by Kiyu

All the way from Hong Kong has this little thing travelled. Anna, it made me so happy and I shall write back <3

And yes, I let my address stay visible on purpose, because that’s the address of the post office where all student mail is to be sent to, meaning you can’t actually stalk me, unless… well, unless you’re on campus and can actually spot me and physically follow me around. Omb, creepy.

“Ladies first.”

Friday, October 9th, 2009 by Kiyu

The sound of two pairs of feet clacked across the floor, oddly distinct from the others. One could tell by the slow thuds echoing softly across the floor, that the owners had all the time in the world to kill. Both of their feet were pointing towards the same destination; the entrance of the building. The leading pair, which had a dignified air to its movements, was clad in a pair of polished smart shoes. The pair trotting cheerily behind was wrapped up in all bubbles and cotton candy, more commonly known as flats or ballerinas among the mortals.

Polished was reading aloud from a book while Ballerina was busy tending to her paper bags. Just before the exit, Polished halted and put away his book.

“Ladies first,” he curtsied and stepped aside. He had clearly been ahead of her, but he still indicated for Ballerina to pass through before him. Her eyes grew wide with wonder. Did he bow just now? She stepped through, looking rather shyly towards Polished; “Why, thank you.”

As Polished followed through after her, he flashed her a brilliant smile and wished her a “lovely evening”. And then he was gone.

Tough stuff, my lovelies!

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 by Kiyu

So I’ve properly started my course, and let me just tell you; it’s tough. I’m not just saying it, it is tough. Not just because I don’t recognize the scientific terms in English and therefore tend to stare at the lecturer with a blank face (I actually do), and it’s not just because we are deducted marks for every silly thing (though I guess it’s fair, this is England), and it’s not just because I need to finish my course in only four years, which academic school years are way shorter than Norwegian ones. No, it’s because I have 6 modules (emner) this term while my friends and flat mates have 3. Now THAT is freaky. Having 6 modules also means my workload piles up, and I have to do several assignments in one night. Which again means I don’t really have much time for anything else, especially when my days are 9-17.

I’m slightly freaked out, one; because I obviously lack the vocabulary to understand and participate verbally
Two; because of the above, I (will) fall behind
Three; I won’t have the time to breathe

Oh, Facebook and Twitter are quite useful if you want to know all the random and silly things during my life here.

Thoughts of a troubled mind

Monday, September 14th, 2009 by Kiyu

It’s my last night.

My last night in Porsgrunn. My last night in the usual bed, my last night with familiar scents and sounds to soothe me. Do I need the soothing? Not really. Alas, this chapter from a book called “Kiyu’s Story”, is coming to an end. A new chapter awaits.

Soon, I will embark on a voyage I never planned to go on. I never planned to set sail, never planned to call upon the winds to carry the ship to its destination. I was merely watching the sailors from afar, only approached them on land because they were so mysterious, seemed so exciting. I wasn’t going to come with them once they set sail, but the breeze was too strong and eventually I was carried away. In my heart, I am bubbling over with excitement and am convinced that this will be a most enjoyable journey, it will be an adventure which tale I will tell my children over and over again — but I am also aware that the first couple of weeks will be very lonely. (Did I actually just say that?)

Guys, I will long for your company. I will feel like I left a chunk of my heart back in Norway. But it’s alright, it’s where it belongs, it’s home.

Really, anyone, anywhere, anytime; do write me. A short note on a post card, a winding letter (<3), or just to tease me with a piece of (black, salty liquorice) candy. Address your choice to:

Kieu Ly Truong, CAP
Constable Terrace
University of East Anglia
Norwich NR4 7TJ
England

..and you will have made my day.

Love, Kieu

003

An undesirable desire from looks was born,
A distance firmly kept.
She knew the danger she was sworn,
And regretting much she left.

His strength was nothing, his courage less,
But yet he whirled her around,
To face him boldly without mess,
And in that face she found;

Embarrassed eyes,
And tainted cheeks,
The earnest that held no lies.

An unexpected phone call from England

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 by Kiyu

Yes, a call from England, my dear readers! And guess who the caller was? None other than Anna Tonkin, the mother of the boy! Brits never cease to amaze me with their perfect pronunciation of my first name; Kieu. A feat Norwegians are rarely able to achieve, I’m sorry to say. Partly why I’m mostly known as Kiyu/Kyu in these regions. At one point or another, you just get tired of endlessly repeating to strangers how to pronounce your name. “You know what, just call me Kiyu!”

Anyways, she was wondering whether I was still interested, and you can bet your gut that I was! While I was having a mental fit of panic, my physical self was putting in a great effort to sound calm, collected and intelligent, so that Mrs. Tonkin wouldn’t think a total airhead was going to teach her son Norwegian. I wouldn’t put my money on my success though, I wasn’t sure what to say whenever she didn’t ask me a qestion, and she seemed like she was waiting for me to say something. Er. Not good, I guess. She asked things like whether I had arranged any accommodation (a small part of me was blissfully wondering whether she was possibly going to suggest I stay with her) and when I was coming to Norwich. I’m going to meet her to discuss things once I’ve been settled in Norwich, so it’ll be great :)

I really can’t wait. I think the deal’s more or less there, so I guess I have to go hunt for children’s books! Asbjørnsen & Moe and the Brothers Grimm, here I come!

Jeg tror guttungen kommer til å elske meg, hva tror dere? Foto: Britt

Forberedelser

Monday, September 7th, 2009 by Kiyu

HELL YEAH, I GET TO TEACH!

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 by Kiyu

Just a quick update to tell you guys something amazing! You probably don’t know, but my true goal in the academic and professional life, is to someday become a professor. I love education, I love school, and yeah, I know I’m a total dork :3

There’s a married couple in Norfolk (Norwich, where I’ll be staying, lies within Norfolk), the mother is British while the father is Norwegian. They have a 6 year old son, and Mrs. Tokin, the mother, wants her son to be able to communicate in Norwegian as well. She therefore contacted ANSA UK, which sent an e-mail to ME and asked me if I was interested in tutoring the boy.

HELL YEAH I AM! This is so unbelievable! I get to teach! At the age of mere 19! And a (half) British kid too!

Seems like amazing things keep happening to me! Must be because my 19th birthday is coming up soon! Probably a heavenly gift! Anna, dear Anna, I honestly almost believe my life really is a fairy tale!

Here’s the exact e-mail I got:

Wish me luck in getting the job! (I’ll do it for free if I have to!)
