Homemade Sushi

Monday, August 17th, 2009 by Kiyu

ML showing how to roll the sushi.

It was a fine summer day 1-2 years ago that I tried sushi for the very first time in my life. I was convinced that I would love it. Why wouldn’t I, when I loved anything else Japan-related? I pushed away the horrible memories of earlier experiences with raw seafood (you’d be surprised at how weird Asians are), and deliberated for a very long time whether or not I would have the guts to chomp down some raw salmon wrapped in sticky rice. The sushi was trapped between my chopsticks for quite some time before I finally managed to take a bite and chew — and had to hurry to find somewhere to spit it out.

I can’t eat sushi, the consistency of the raw fish makes my stomach roll and churn, and always threatens to force my body to throw up my tummy contents. Not a pleasant feeling, and definitely not a pleasant sight. Sigh.

So I just watched ML and Phuc make the sushi yesterday.

The misshaped sushi.

Phuc and I also went out for a late movie at the local cinema last night. We watched The Proposal, which surpassed all my expectations! It’s no usual chick-flick, actually, I wouldn’t say it’s a chick-flick at all; it’s perfect for both genders with its genuine humor and small moments of compassion! It’s hilarious, but not in the brainless way, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it! The trailer does it no justice at all. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Cales composed a beautiful song for my birthday (yes, he’s a pianist). I jokingly suggested the idea half a year ago or so, but I didn’t really think he’d actually do it. He was home for the weekend and I had him play it for me when I went down yesterday to pay him and Katrina a visit. Wish I hadn’t been too entranced by it, I would have gotten my phone out to record it and let you all hear!

“See you soon, eh.”

Monday, July 13th, 2009 by Kiyu

It will never be farewell until one of us dies, but good bye for now.

You’re wimpy, a wuss, you’re not a real man, your view of compassion is warped, and you hate it whenever I call you ‘Peter’. But. You’re also a strong person, a philosopher, a deep thinker and above all that; you are one of my greatest friends. Remember when I threw myself onto your bed the first time I was at your place? That was my way of saying; “Hey man, I feel real comfortable with you, let’s be great friends from now on.”

I dedicate this post to you because I don’t know when I will be able to see you again, now that you’re on your way to Japan on some kind of program and I’m off to England to study. With your excellent ability to keep in touch, we’re probably not going to cross paths again until we’re both 35 and have two kids each.

Until we meet again, cheesecake.
