Bookcrossing; an amazing concept!

Sunday, August 30th, 2009 by Kiyu

From their website:

What’s BookCrossing?

BookCrossing is the act of releasing books “into the wild” and then following their journeys and the lives they touch. www.bookcrossing.com is the website that makes it all possible.

Leave it on a park bench, a coffee shop, at a hotel on vacation. Share it with a friend or tuck it onto a bookshelf at the gym — anywhere it might find a new reader! What happens next is up to fate, and we never know where our books might travel. Track the book’s journey around the world as it is passed on from person to person.

Isn’t this the most awesome idea you’ve ever come across? Now I don’t have to sneak my books into my siblings’ shelves anymore! Like I said to Lutten earlier; “If you have more books than shelves; start bookcrossing!” I’ve already ordered special Release Bags and a Starter Kit with sturdy bookcrossing labels to explain the concept of bookcrossing to the Finders! Books from my collection that I definitely will have to Release into the wild:

Lyonesse by Jack Vange (paperback) cover

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer (hardcover, UK 1st edition) cover

Brisingr by Christopher Paolini (pretty paperback!) cover

…and three more I don’t remember the names of right now. Some of them I own two copies of, while others were books I randomly bought but were so bad I never finished them. My books need a new home, so if you’d like to read any of them, please let me know and I might be able to do a Controlled Release :) I only ask of you to go to bookcrossing.com to type in he BCID number (will be written on the bookplate label) so that the book will be mapped and I know where it has been! And then Release my book again so that others might enjoy it! :D

Thank you, Maisen, for introducing me to the concept of bookcrossing!

So what do you think of the concept? Pretty amazing, eh? :D

A House of Night Novel(s)

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009 by Kiyu

Just want to show you the new books I bought! I can’t stay away from books, I just simply can’t! I told myself I would buy neither books nor clothes for as long as I was still staying in Norway (’cause both are cheaper in England and I can’t possibly bring everything with me when I move anyways), but The Mortal Instruments books were shipped to my house not long ago.. And behold! Here I bought books again! The covers caught my eye, and I really shouldn’t have asked ML to take one of them down so that I could read the teaser description — ’cause it made me buy three of them. So I’m gonna read them tonight and see if they’re any good. I bet Lutten would’ve loved them!

I usually don’t like vampire stories, but some are really good (so I’m giving these books a try). Other vampire book series I’ve read and really liked;

Darren Shan
Fight first against what you have become, later to fit in, and then for vengeance. The story’s got some really neat (but oh so heartbreaking!) twists as well! Guys will be perfectly safe reading it – there’s little to no romance!

Twilight
Though I adore the books, I can understand why people think it’s overrated. Just take a look at the hysterical tweens! xD

The Morganville Vampires
Most vamps and their humans in Morganville are creepy, brutal bastards who knows no compassion. We love it partly because there’s a good deal of romance going on in the midst of deceiving the vamps!

[fan art] Clary and Jace

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 by Kiyu

clarynjace

“One of the Silent Brothers is here to see you. Hodge sent me to wake you up. Actually he offered to wake you himself, but since it’s 5 a.m., I figured you’d be less cranky if you had something nice to look at.”
“Meaning you?”
“What else?”

After laughing in amusement and gasping in anguish during the adventures of the Mortal Instruments books, I figured I owed the author some fan art for not disappointing. So here it is, a sketch of Clary and Jace, a pairing which brought much joy and pain to me as a reader. Joy because their relationship is so raw and dear, pain because — well, you’ll just have to read it. Clary is an artist who describes herself as ‘cute’, but swearing to jeans and sweaters didn’t exactly make her very feminine. I decided I’d let Isabelle fix her up again before I started drawing her (how can I possibly resist the temptation to make Clary all girly and pretty when she’s got wonderfully red and curly hair!) – note her embarrassed expression.

Jace is his usual sexy, confident and sarcastic self (but good-natured), though how I managed to make him look hot with those stupid, golden curls of his, is a mystery. I even put on the faint white lines of inactive, faded runes on his chest – can you tell? I put some active ones on both of them as well, and I dressed them up in shadowhunter gear! Or at least my version of it. Jace decided – much to our joy – that he didn’t need the black top underneath, the coat alone was sufficient, hurr hurr.

Lutten’s complaining about the design of the stele. Shaddap, that’s how I imagined it while reading! (And the seraph blades look even duller in my imagination when inactive, hehe)

I quite like this sketch, perhaps I should give it a go?

Fashion blogs are an inspiration

Monday, September 29th, 2008 by Kiyu

First thing first: I got my hands on a copy of Brisingr, the third installment in the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini (Eragon being the first book) today! Surprisingly enough I bought the paperback version and not the hardcover one. Isn’t that strange? I used to refuse to – nearly voved not to – buy books in paperback no matter how much cheaper they were. Merely because hardcovers are a lot more fancy and because they just seem right. Is that not how books are supposed to be? With stiff and exclusive covers, not those thin and esily ripped off papery ones.
I did spend a lot of time discussing mentally with myself whether I should or not. I really wanted to get it in hardcover. I hope someone wants to buy Brisingr and who isn’t that picky about paperbacks or hardcovers, so that I can sell this paperback one and buy myself a new one in hardcover!

Back to the topic title: I have been lurking around on fashion blogs a lot lately. You would think that I wasn’t all that interested in clothes, since I’m not that obsessed about having to look my best everyday. To hell with make-up. I just need my hair done. Although I am ridiculously obsessed when it comes to hair. But you know, fashion is art. Fashion is all about being creative, therefore it is art.
So, inspired by all these fashion blogs and their bloggers, I have decided that from this day on I will sketch my outfit and hairdo of the day I blog to practice drawing frequently/more often. You see, I’m usually quite a lazy bum when it comes to art.
Don’t expect too much from my outfits though, schooldays aren’t my best days. Who’s got time or the effort to dress up for school anyway?

Hair: one length braided from ear to ear like a hair band. The other length is left unbraided, and the back is ruffled/spiked into wild messyness. A straight fringe with only a little hint of side-sweep on the right side.

Clothes:

  • A plain, grey and quite long hoodie to keep the cold out
  • A white spaghetti top underneath, barely visible at the bottom to make my torso seem longer
  • Green polka dot scarf
  • White shorts
  • Black stockings
  • Yellow converse shoes (not visible here because I can’t draw converse to save my life)

Why yes, I am clutching a take-away cup of hot chocolate for archery practice! (It’s cold, alright.)

Books, books and even more books

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 by Kiyu

Guess who’s got The Host in her possession? Yes, that’s right. Me. It arrived a lot sooner than I thought it would. Normally, it takes approximately two weeks for Amazon’s items to reach me, and The Host was released on May 6th.
It’s a huge chunk of paper. It’s gigantic! I was really surprised to see that it was bigger than than my Twilight books. I even compared the letter/font size of The Host with Eclipse. It’s the same.
The Host is a solid 600 pages book with page measurements 24cm×16cm. I en’t kidding you. This is going to be a yummy book for sure, I can tell. You’re wondering why? Then let me tell you;

1. It’s Stephenie Meyer’s book
2. The bigger, the better!
3. I already read the first chapter, and it was very promising.

I’m going to devour it with passion as soon as I’m finished with The Amber Spyglass, the third book in His Dark Materials triology (The Golden Compass). I’t won’t be long, I’m nearly done with half of it. I’m currently residing in Lyra’s world, or should I say, the many worlds that Lyra and Will travel in and out of. I am so fascinated by the books, they really are good! Of course, no-one can beat Stephenie Meyer, but Philip Pullman did manage to hurl me into the world of Dust and Dæmons and make me wish my own soul were walking along beside me in the form of a Dæmon.
A Dæmon is your soul in an animal shape outside your body. He will be the opposite of your sex (in my case; a he), and your dearest companion throughout your whole life. He is just as intelligent as any human, because he is your soul after all, and his shape and behaviour will reflect your own personality. A person with a snake Dæmon would for instance be cunny and sly, while one with a dog Dæmon would be obedient and disciplined. And yes, they can talk.
I wonder what kind of animal form my Dæmon would have settled as.

A few weeks ago, I read about Stephenie Meyer being chosen as one of 100 most influential people in the world in The Times. To think that she in such a short time managed to climb this high, after only three books. I did pay a visit to Rolf and Maisen today after spending nearly the whole day at Trinh’s place (mostly sleeping), and was surprised by two things:
One, Rolf, who had been a bit skeptical to Stephenie Meyer’s works because he’s not too fond of fantasy, had discovered her in his The Times magazine and was bursting to show it to me.
Two, Maisen, who had just returned home from a trip to London and The Globe, had gotten me a beautiful bookmark featturing Romeo and Juliet in the balcony scene, because she knew how fond I was of the play.
I’ve scanned in the article about Stephenie Meyer for those who would like to take a look :D

Listening to: The Golden Compass soundtrack (surprisingly dissappointing)
Reading: The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman (Br. fantasy) – His Dark Materials book 3
