“I like my music to be organic.”

November 1st, 2009 by Kiyu

An old class mate from Norway. I hope you don’t mind, Ingeborg, you’re amazing with the violin.

“What kind of music do you like?”

I am always inquired about my taste of music whenever I am introduced to new people. It’s a safe topic to start a conversation with, it’s subtle, it’s general and it’s a topic you will be sure to get a reply on. It’s a topic which might result in a new soul mate or a heated discussion. Me? I always reply rather untelligble;

“Beautiful music.”

Much can be said about beautiful music as you should assume everything would be beautiful as long as the person finds it so. However, that is not the quality I have applied to my term in this scenario. As much as I enjoy my rockin’ poppin’ guitar riffs in more upbeat rock/punk/pop tunes, they are not ‘beautiful’ in the same sense. They would be catchy, funky, great and so on. You get my drift. ‘Beautiful’ here would be heartbreaking tunes, crystal-clear voices and soft whispers. A string on a violin, air blowing through a flute, an overwhelming story of emotion produced by a philharmonic orchestra — a dramatic piece, a fragile moment.

I prefer my instruments not to be tarnished by inorganic, electronical impulses, nor do I like my soft voices to become hard and edgy and drowned in heavy beats. I know people like to move their body to the beats of their music. I am weird enough to want to dream, imagine and feel to my music.

But as I realize the term ‘beautiful’ is wrong in this case, I’ve chosen another term to go by; organic. Next time someone asks me, I’ll tell them I like my music to be organic.

And I really should get back to doing my pharmacy stuff now. Deadline tomorrow and course test and another deadline on thursday. Crap.

You know me, and I know you. So it would come as no surprise to you when i say: I heartily agree :)

Music can very well be beautiful even with hard/edgy parts. The vocalist of a band I listen to (Blue October) has a kind of rough voice, but he sings with so much feeling that some of the songs have actually made me cry, just from listening to them.

Alot of the music I listen to are probably not what you would call “organic”, but they still fill me with emotion, at least as much as orchestratic music (which I also very much like).

Sorry for being confusing, I’ve added a few changes to my text to make it clearer what I really meant; not what the term beauty itself could be (you probably remember the other post I wrote about specifically that), but what kind of music I personally found beautiful :)

Sorry if I made it sound like I was excluding all other kinds of music from being beautiful — as long as it evokes an emotion, it’s beautiful :)

Organic music is a meaningless description. It by it self means nothing at all. And I don’t agree with your restrictive interpretation at all. The only thing that comes to mind as “organic music” is new age and that kind of music which is mostly sounds made with a synthesizer and varius strings and flutes on top and som sparse vocals, aka music people tend to fall asleep listening to. (And don’t misunderstand it, I like New Age.), however is not really what you’re talking about anyway… You mention a orchestra, but that is not arganic musoc. As most brass instruments is not really organic in any way. It’s metal and therefore not organic.

I don’t really agree with “beautiul” either. This is individual. What you call “beautiful” i might call “boring”. Some of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard has lots of variations. Easygoing parts, angry parts. Lots of different emotions. I can use X Japan’s “Art of Life” as an example. It has piano, strings, REALLY hard and fast paced guitar riffs all in one big 30 minute mix, including a part on piano which is mostly wild bashing at the piano. THAT is beauty, because it’s filled with so much emotion. (Read more about the song here: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?albumid=1791 and i can also tell you that you’ll hate it, because it does not match your preferences.)

As I’ve had my encounters with your taste in music, I feel that what you really like is just calm music. Not any particular style, just calm music. There is ofcourse exceptions (you like some upbeat happyrock too), but that’s mostly it imho.

As you changed some of the parts you can disregard the critisism on your definition on “beautiful music”. I read the original entry and didn’t reread it when i wrote today. :p

Arganic Musoc is my best typo this month. <3

      I DON’T CARE EH-EH-EH-EH-EH! :D

Haha!
