Dear Monsieur Anonyme, I’m sorry!

July 31st, 2009 by Kiyu

Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! I can’t possibly keep this to myself, this has to be shared! Do you guys remember the post I wrote about true gentlemen being extinct a few days ago? Well, keep that in mind when you read the rest of this post!

I checked the mailbox yesterday just before heading off to ML to watch a movie – and I discovered two letters addressed to me; one was a standard, boring one from my bank, but the other one really caught my attention.

Sorry, had to blur my address — showing my full name is bad enough!

The envelope was made from a pretty textured paper with a lovely cream color with my full name and address typed on it by one of those old, vintage typewriters they had during WWII. We all agreed the typewriting was such a wonderful detail.

I first thought it was a formal invitation to something important, because;

  1. Only public institutions would print my name on an envelope
  2. I didn’t know anyone who was getting married

But it still seemed weird to me that any public institution would invite me to anything as grand and formal as the pretty envelope spoke of. My second thought was that this was yet another attempt from some organization who would like me to support their cause. Little did I know how far off I was. I gently opened the envelope, and inside I found this:

Alright, so I royalty screwed up on the P.S: Tell no one part — but did he honestly think I was going to keep this to myself when he signed it as Monsieur Anonyme? I would have have to shut up about it if it was actually signed by name, because then I would have to consider his embarrassment of being ‘humiliated’ (what humiliation?!), but as I see it right now — no harm will come to anyone since I don’t have a clue of who this could be!

I have eliminated most of my guy friends by asking them directly, and most of them just got upset and offended that I would even think that they would make such silly grammar errors. Which I must agree, all my guy friends are really good at English.

But heavens, how exciting this is! And not to mention; how incredible romantic! ..and creepy. Well, right now I choose to ignore the creepy part. No need to destroy my happy bubble! I’ll just deal with the dangerous part this could indicate to, later. This is just unbelievable. Incredible. This stuff only happens in movies, damnit! Not in real life! At least not in my life! But gosh, this is so funny! How’s it, Anna? Perhaps my life really is a fairy tale!

Monsieur Anonyme, you have no idea how happy you made me. This better not be a really bad prank you’re pulling off on me! ‘Cause then I’ll hunt ya down and kick yer butt! Believe me, I may be small in size, but I haven’t been made leader of most projects for nothing!

I expect to hear from you again!

P.S. My analyzing instincts are kicking in! You know, after the double up of analyzes with me taking eng. lit. class as well, I’ve already pretty much over-analyzed this letter. Especially the last line.

You bet! I don’t know if I should be creeped out (he signed it as Monsieur Anonyme!) or thankful!

First of… What grammar mistakes…? I only find a comma missing and two letters mischanged… It is merely written in correct formal British. Which is in truth itself a quite refreshing tone to hear in todays society. I would greatly enjoy to hear such English be spoken again one day, in contradiction to the current linguistic develompents.

Secondly, I believe this to be one of the most romantic events I have heard of, outside of the fantasy world that is cinema of course, in a very long time. Taken not as a mere note on a piece of paper, but a statement of higher virtue, it signifies a longing that is held in what I am sure must be a not small number of men to be able to return to the days of grace and courtesy towards women, rather than the objectification that has been occuring in the last 50 years or more.

I hope that you will again be the recipient of contact from this ‘Monsieur Anonyme’, that you may become better aquainted or, should it be someone with whom you are already familiar, that you may possibly engage in a closer relationship than before. I am sure that he will not mind such things as it being posted online like this as his identity is virtually guaranteed to be out of the hands of anyone who might think less of him for his above displayed actions.

    Best Wishes in future endeavours.
    Michael

I have been trying to compose a thoughtful response to your lovely comment, but I can’t seem to think properly these days — unless driven by passionate feelings. Did I mention in the last couple of months (or years) in what high regard I hold such values? I did? Well, it can’t possibly hurt, mentioning it twice.

In short what I’m trying to say is; I completely, utterly, uncompromisingly agree with you. Totally.

You have mentioned before your preferance towards such behaviour, yes. And you are correct that there is nothing wrong with emphasizing such a point once more! I just wish that such action was not even necessary. If only more men could realize that behaving properly, rather than trying to appear as ‘cool’ is the correct behaviour for decent men. But let’s face reality for a moment. It is not often encouraged to behave decently towards women, not even by women themselves. At least not these days.
That is why I felt compelled to comment on this post, wanting to show my appreciation not only for ‘Monsieur Anonyme’ but also of a young lady who actually appreciates, well, us. Thank you very much for showing your support for men who are not afraid to act with honour and decency, regardless of how others may judge them. ^_^

Wow, I would’ve been pretty freaked out.. and soooo curious to find out who in the world would send me this letters. First of it had to be a person who reads your blog, and obviously have some small crush on you.

Haha! You actually remembered me mentioning that! I admit that sometimes wonderful and magical things happens, but usually not. What I meant was to not hope too much.

wow. this is seriously incredible. I kind of wish things like this would happen to me as it would be some inspiration and joy to my boring life. but i’m just wondering..is there really no way to find who sent this to you? and how can there be no return address, the address of who this person sent it from and how? kind of sounds weird and fishy to me…

but regardless. congratulations :D. you have probably experienced one of the things that only few, special people in the world probably experiences within a lifetime.

You’re not required to put on the return address on letters in Norway, you see :) So unless he actually contacts me again and give me some kind of hint, I will never know.

Thank you. I also think this is incredibly amazing n_n
