Food/cooking

Vietnamese cuisine

Sunday, October 25th, 2009 by Kiyu

I went to town with Olivia, Fiona, Danny and his friend and found some nuoc mam (!) on saturday. Which means I will finally be able to make this yummy bastard:

I swear sundays are the perfect “cooking” day. If Whiteball was here this weekend I’d feed him, his cooking skills are rubbish.

I went for quasar (laser game/tag) with my archery club on wednesday. I kinda associate it with CS in-real-life set in a dark dungeon/room/maze where your weapon is a laser gun and you have a base to protect. I actually managed to shoot my own team four times, so we ended up with a negative score and lost brilliantly. Sorry, Blue Team! It was so much fun, but I kept falling a lot (I stumbled around in the dark trying to avoid the orange team), and my thighs are now sending me spasms of pain every single time I bend my legs. Which basically means whenever I’m walking up/down stairs (imagine my daily trips between my room and the kitchen) and sitting down. Even when I walk. I think my thighs will become quite colourful very soon!

Halloween is coming up, and I really want to go thrift store shopping to make something to wear! Not that I have the time! But will do anyway!

Trinh, I got you Nylon and Numéro today. Will hunt down your list every time I pop into a book store!

Bento box, checked!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 by Kiyu

I made a bento box made of rice, eggs and hot dogs! Just recreating things I saw on random pictures I found of bento boxes on google. No vegetables whatsoever, though, we’re out of loads! I still have two pigs, five mushrooms and some random hot dog pieces left!

Homemade Sushi

Monday, August 17th, 2009 by Kiyu

ML showing how to roll the sushi.

It was a fine summer day 1-2 years ago that I tried sushi for the very first time in my life. I was convinced that I would love it. Why wouldn’t I, when I loved anything else Japan-related? I pushed away the horrible memories of earlier experiences with raw seafood (you’d be surprised at how weird Asians are), and deliberated for a very long time whether or not I would have the guts to chomp down some raw salmon wrapped in sticky rice. The sushi was trapped between my chopsticks for quite some time before I finally managed to take a bite and chew — and had to hurry to find somewhere to spit it out.

I can’t eat sushi, the consistency of the raw fish makes my stomach roll and churn, and always threatens to force my body to throw up my tummy contents. Not a pleasant feeling, and definitely not a pleasant sight. Sigh.

So I just watched ML and Phuc make the sushi yesterday.

The misshaped sushi.

Phuc and I also went out for a late movie at the local cinema last night. We watched The Proposal, which surpassed all my expectations! It’s no usual chick-flick, actually, I wouldn’t say it’s a chick-flick at all; it’s perfect for both genders with its genuine humor and small moments of compassion! It’s hilarious, but not in the brainless way, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it! The trailer does it no justice at all. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Cales composed a beautiful song for my birthday (yes, he’s a pianist). I jokingly suggested the idea half a year ago or so, but I didn’t really think he’d actually do it. He was home for the weekend and I had him play it for me when I went down yesterday to pay him and Katrina a visit. Wish I hadn’t been too entranced by it, I would have gotten my phone out to record it and let you all hear!

Who said I needed a recipe?

Sunday, July 5th, 2009 by Kiyu

My mother made an oyster dish, a seafood dish, again. Remembering how I had puked the guts out of me four years ago when I last tasted oyster, had me rummaging through the cabinets for something I could cook for myself – so that I wouldn’t have to skip dinner again. I felt like having a steak, and knew I had a slab of raw meat in the fridge, but I’d left my favorite spice mix at Phuc’s, so that was out of question. I proceeded with what I usually do when I don’t have the faintest idea of what to cook and don’t want to overdo it; I throw in a bunch of different ingredients currently available, and pray to the stars that it’ll turn out edible.

I boiled a handfull of dried pasta screws and a wiener sausage, chopped up the sausage, sizzled it all together with two raw eggs, added some salt and pepper (I was about to add some Asian spices as well, but hey, gotta play it safe), and served with roasted slices of baguette and fresh salad. Tasted pretty damn good as well.

My younger brother Johnny, who usually can’t stay away from mother’s oyster dish, happily stuffed in two thirds of my meal. He usually does whenever I decide to be experimental in the kitchen (he’s got guts) – now that’s what I call success! I promised him a cookbook for his birthday in October; “Kiyu’s kitchen experiments for dummies”!

Now you try it! Or tell me about your own embarrassing (or successful) kitchen experiments!

Lembas – elvish waybread

Saturday, November 15th, 2008 by Kiyu

“Lembas, elvish waybread. One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man.”

Usually eaten on long journeys were food might be hard to find, these deliciously sweet and slightly lemon flavored elven bread are a rare and most favored treat. Wrapped in a mallorn leaf, the bread stays fresh and can last you for ages.

I thought I should cast off my human disguise and make Cales some elven lembas bread for his birthday today. He’s a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, and especially the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I thought it was a splendid idea :D According to Tolkien himself these magical, elven bread are slightly lemon flavored and taste heavenly. They don’t really taste heavenly, but they are quite good. There’s no lemba without a mallorn leaf to wrap around it, so I made one as well to accompany the bread.

Now I’m a bit bummed I didn’t get to eat more of those :( They were just about flavored enough to tingle your tastebudds. Hm, I think only those who enjoy Tolkien’s works would appreciate these biscuits. I imagine they’re a bit too plain and taste too bland for the average cake-eater!
